Customize your grip and tab

How to grip a bow correctly

It takes a long time to find what works for your anatomy but it's worth it to use something you are comfortable with and that includes a grip matched to your hand and a tab to your fingers as these always have contact to your bow.

FIX YOUR TIMING

Jean Charles velladont

mistake archers make with timing is that they are focused too much on aiming and not on the movement.

This happens when the archer is scared of not aiming quickly enough when moving through the shot.

This is valid as when we are moving through the draw, it's normal for the aim to be everywhere.

To improve this?

PRIORITIZE YOUR MOVEMENT

Kim woojin

You need to keep the movement at all costs. You won't be aiming as well at first but your brain will slowly learn to aim at the gold earlier and eventually your grouping will be tighter.

DoN'T OVERPRIORITIZE YOUR ANCHOR

Shoulder placement in archery

Having a really tight and secure anchor will make it harder for your to move your elbow around your body.

Remember, the priority is your elbow movement and getting your anchor as your elbow moves.

TOO MUCH POUNDAGE

Archers choice 2m

Having a heavy draw weight means it's harder for you to pull, therefore, increasing the load and time needed to do your shot. It's best to shoot with a poundage you are

comfortable with shooting.

DON'T SCORE

3d archery

During practice, do not score at first and let yourself learn to prioritize the movement of your shot cycle and not the aiming.

You can also shoot alternatively at a target face and blank bale. Then challenge yourself with scoring as you improve.

USE A METRONOME

Archers choice 2m

Use a metronome with 60 beats per minute and use this to get in a rhythm with your shot cycle. This can help you have consistent timing and therefore a

consistent shot and better scores.

TRAIN. ALOT

It's pretty obvious if you want to be a good at any skill. You have to give it time and a ton of repetitions to get good at any sport.

But...some archers don't shoot a lot and still improve, whereas some archers shoot loads but don't improve. So why does this happen?

THEY ARE SPOT ON WITH THE BASICS

Archers choice 2m

It's normal to think that the pros have some secret technique that makes them so good, but the basics is the foundation of any sport. And archery is no different.

Every pro archer has the basics mastered.

TOP ARCHERS ARE SUPER FOCUSED

Chang Hye Jin korea

Top archers shoot a lot, but not just for the sake of shooting arrows. They shoot arrows to actually get better. They shoot to improve a specific area of their technique and get feedback from every shot they do.

The pros don't just shoot and go home. They're always trying to improve.

ACCEPTING FEEDBACK

Manjeet Malik umra archery

The top archers leave their egos at the door. They always seek feedback from different archers and different coaches. They see feedback as advice and not criticism. They seek knowledge that makes sense and is applicable to them.

Remember, there's no point in getting upset with feedback

THEY FAIL

Failing is good and a sign you're trying new things, you should be open to it.

Every single athlete that existed has done something wrong in their respective sport. Sometimes a technique is uncomfortable and you've spent weeks trying to perfect it, but it's just not for you.

This wasn't wasted time. As long as you learn something and try again, it's time well spent.

PUSH THEIR LIMITS

Ana Paula

Pro archers are always pushing their limits. One week they might increase the number of arrows they shoot. Then they might test themselves more in scoring another week. Or maybe they'll give themself difficult challenges in training.

It's about finding ways to challenge yourself and find progress.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH

Penny healey

They look at their archery performance as a whole. They improve their nutrition, health, fitness, sleep patterns, relationships...etc

They also use all the tools available to them to make their archery better like feedback, coaching, light bow work, bow

training...etc.

They leave no stone unturned to be a better archer.
